Training: riverside 4K

While my knees and toe probably would've preferred more bike work, I was working in the office today, so went out for a short run at lunch instead. Given I didn't want to aggravate the toe too much in advance of Sunday's orienteering, I went for a fairly flat route. I also just wanted to get away from people and be somewhere calmer than the centre of Newcastle on the run-up to Christmas. Today's route took me past the Black Gate, then under the railway line and onto Forth Street behind the station. It was around this point that the gentle rain turned into a downpour and I was glad I'd put my fleece on. 😂 The rain continued on and off as I jogged past the Centre for Life and onwards to the Arena. The new phone wasn't giving me announcements of my progress (yet another thing to set up), but a quick check showed I'd been going about 7 minutes. Parkrun #35: Sedgefield (Hardwick Park)

A week since my PB of 24:27 at Blyth, today was my first run since then and it showed. While I was happy to have a slower parkrun, I didn't intend for it to be this much slower, registering a 26:56 in the end. That's pretty much 2½ minutes slower. And even that felt hard. I honestly don't know whether it was down to the lack of midweek running, general tiredness from a few days away to London (that would feel like a very weak excuse), or something else. Whatever it was, this wasn't easy. Midweek: Elswick Cemetery (and the Hill of Doom)

A bit later than hoped, but got back to the midweek runs today after my parkrun PB triumph on Saturday. Running from work, Lorraine asked on the way out where I was going to run and, typically, I didn't know. But I did say there's nothing attractive to the west, yet I'd not gone that way much. And that pretty much sealed it; west it was! Elswick Cemetery. Pity about the van in this, cos the building itself was pretty impressive. As soon as I stepped out onto Grey Street, I was greeted with sunshine... and properly leaden skies. The temperature was pretty mild (15°C-ish) but Google's earlier forecast for rain around 1pm was looking accurate. Sure enough, within a few minutes it started spotting and eventually drenched me for 5–10 minutes straight. My route took me along High Bridge, across the Bigg Market , and on down... a continuation of High Bridge?
